Alathur Brothers Srinivasa Iyer (1911-1980) & Sivasubramania Iyer (1916-1965) were Carnatic vocalists. The world of Carnatic music knows them as the star duo of the twentieth century. They learnt under Alathur Venkatesa Iyer, the father of Sivasubramania Iyer. They were not brothers by birth.
Born at Trisoor, Kerala to Smt. Mukthambal and Sri. N. Chidambaram Iyer, the sisters were brought up in Bombay, where their father was working as Electrical Engineer in the Western Railway. Smt. Saroja and Smt. Lalitha had their education in the S.I.E.S. Matunga, passed their intermediate privately from Bhopal, M.P. and completed their graduation from the Delhi University by correspondence.
Karukurichi N. Shashikiran’s talents were discovered when he was a toddler. At two, he stormed the music world as a child prodigy who could identify Ragas, demonstrate complicated Talas and answer other technical questions pertaining to Carnatic music. Having made his mark as a vocalist and scholar, Shashikiran currently performs Vocal Duet concerts along with his cousin ‘Chitravina’ P. Ganesh. They are popularly known as the CARNATICA BROTHERS.
