Ashok Ramani

Papanasam Ashok Ramani (10th April, 1964) is a noted Carnatic vocal musician and the grandson of Tamil Carnatic composer Papanasam Sivan.

Born on April 10, 1964, commenced music training at a very young age with his mother Dr.Rukmini Ramani (daughter of Papanasam Sivan). Subsequently was under the tutelage of Dr.S.Ramanathan. Learnt from Calcutta K.S.Krishnamurthy & Bombay Ramachandran. A disciple of Palghat K.V.Narayanaswamy for over 17 years. Presently learning from Vidwan Sri.P.S.Narayanaswamy.

Education and Profession

Papanasam Ashok Ramani received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University College of Engineering, Chennai. He also worked as Deputy Manager, Materials in SPIC Heavy Chemicals Division, SPIC upto December 2000. Subsequently, with his passion towards carnatic music, Ashok has been pursuing his career in Music.

  • Performed in Singapore, Malaysia & Mauritius in 1995
  • Performed at the Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival at Cleveland, Ohio in April 1996 and April 1997. Also performed in the US on a 3-month tour in April 1997
  • Visited Hong Kong, Singapore & Malaysia on a lecture-demonstration cum workshop tour in May 2000. Topic of lec-dem “Origin, Basics and Contributions of Carnatic Music & Works of Papanasam Sivan”
  • Visited Muscat in October 2000 to participate in the Papanasam Sivan Day celebrations.
  • Performed at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana festival in April 2001
  • Performed in US and Canada for three months in September 2002
  • Visited USA for workshops and lec-dem in April 2003
  • Participated in Thyagaraja Aradhana at Cleveland in April 2004
  • Visited USA in June 2004 for workshops and held competition on Papanasam Sivan songs in Columbus, Ohio
  • Visited Germany,Paris, in oct 2004 for concerts
  • Toured Germany, Switzerland, London, Paris for concerts in April 2005
  • Visited again Germany for workshop in July 2005
  • Visited Germany, Paris for concerts and held competition on Papanasam Sivan at Dortmund, Germany in October 2005
  • Participated in Thyagaraja Aradhana at Cleveland and toured USA and Canada for concerts and lec-dem in April 2006
