Hailing from a family of musicians and an ancestral lineage of the principal; disciple of saint Thyagaraja, Revathy Krishna picked up the veena at thetender age of 11.
Noting her keen interest in veena, her mother, a noted violinist of her time put her through a formal tutelage from the eminent tutorship of
Shri.Sundaram Iyer, a noted vainika of yester years in Madurai.
The guidance resulted in her flourishing in the art and won her many
accolades and prizes through school and inter college cultural competitions.
She moved to Chennai to pursue an advanced training in Veena which she got under the able guidance of Smt. Sharadha Shivanandham and
Shri.K.P.Shivanandam Pillai where she was trained in the Tanjore style of play. The influence of this style is reminiscent in her rendering which is an evolved version of the finer aspects of all the various styles of Veena play.
By the late 80’s she was an established Carnatic vainika and had performed in all the sabhas, National Radio as well as Doordarshan. Her meteoric rise to fame happened in 2000 when she released 3 albums with film songs rendered on Veena, under the title “Cine Jewel’s on Veena” This proved to be a platform to bridge the gap between classical instruments and the taste of the mass, as it found wide spread acceptance and admiration amongst all. So much so that its one of the most preferred audio discs to be played at Chennai Airports, Popular fast food restraunts and many other public places.
She was the recipient of many honourable awards such as “Kalaimamani” (Tamil Nadu State Award) in 1998 , The “Kumar Gandharwa Award” for excellence in musical arts in 2008 and The “Shakti Sadhana Award” from the reputed magazine Swadesi in 2013.
She was invited by the Hon.Governor of Tamil Nadu state Shri.Ram Mohan Rao to give a special concert at Raj Bhavan Chennai in 2004. This was further followed by an invite by none other than the Hon. President of India Dr.APJ.Abdul Kalam to give a special concert in Rashtrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi in 2007.
She was the prefered choice to perform in front of the King and Queen of Belgium when they had visited Chennai in 2009.
Today, she is the most sought after Vainika and is a regular feature in most VIP Weddings and big corporate events.
She was the first Musician to represent India in the Asian Pacific Cultural
Festival in the year 2002 held in Fukuoka City Japan, where all Asian
Countries participated. She enthralled the Japanese Audience by playing a few popular Japanese Songs along with Traditional and Contemporary Indian Music.
She was invited by the Tamil Sangam of Jakarta (Indonesia) to give a
concert in 2008.
She gave a special concert in 2014 January 26th to celebrate the Indian
Republic day in the Island of Seychelles. The Audience list included The
Minister for Art and Culture, Supreme Court Justice, Police High
Commissioner, and many more. She included the native Creole songs in her concert which made the local audience dance to her melodies.
She was invited by the National Arts Council of Singapore to judge and give a performance at their Annual Music contests in 2004.
The Indian council for Cultural Relations has selected her to give couple of performances in Jaffna and Colombo (Sri Lanka) in 2015.
This apart she has undertaken many private concert tours to countries like Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.
She was invited to give concert for the wedding in The Munjal Family (Hero Honda Group) of New Delhi which was attended by the creme of society in Taj Palace- Delhi where she played only Hindi Film songs to connect with the local audience.
She gave a special concert in the “Ulaga Tamil Semmozhi Maanadu” (World Tamil Classical conference) held in Coimbatore. The concert which was originally scheduled for 1 hour was extended on popular demand for 2 hours.
She is a regular feature on all auspicious days on most Television networks such as Sun TV, Kalaignar TV, Jaya TV, Raj TV and Doordarshan Podigai.
She is a regular feature for VVIP weddings in South India across a broad
spectrum of Film Stars, Industrialists and Politicians.
In a scenario of the Veena sliding down in popularity in the late 80’s she took such marathon efforts for the revival and upliftment of this Traditional Indian instrument and dedicated her life to the same and had been very successful in her Endeavor.
The Speciality of her performances is her ability to quickly adapt to the local flavor and connecting to the audience taste and preference.
